Mon Sep 16 15:37:25 UTC 2024: ## Spain Offers Up to $16,600 to Lure Digital Nomads to Rural Region

**Extremadura, Spain** – The government of Extremadura, a region in western Spain, is offering generous financial incentives to attract digital nomads and tech workers in an effort to revitalize its dwindling population. Under the “Live in Ambroz” initiative, up to 200 professionals can receive grants of up to €15,000 ($16,600) to relocate to the Ambroz Valley in northern Extremadura for at least two years.

The grants, totaling €2 million ($2.2 million), can be used for housing, land, and other essential needs. The initiative is particularly targeting tech professionals who can work remotely, with preference given to women, individuals under 30, and those willing to relocate to towns with less than 5,000 residents.

Extremadura, known for its affordability, freshwater beaches, wineries, and historical sites, presents an attractive alternative to more crowded urban areas. The region boasts an average monthly rent of $531 for a one-bedroom apartment in the city of Badajoz.

The “Live in Ambroz” program is a significant step in addressing the region’s demographic challenges, with officials hoping to replicate the program in other parts of Extremadura if successful. Applications are expected to open in mid-September, with successful applicants receiving €10,000 ($11,000) or €8,000 ($8,900) depending on their location and demographics.

Those who stay for an additional year after the initial two-year period are eligible for an additional €4,000 to €5,000 ($4,400 to $5,500).

This initiative joins a growing trend of communities around the world offering financial incentives to attract remote workers. Experts emphasize the importance of connecting digital nomads with local communities to maximize the benefits of their presence, fostering cultural exchange and economic development.
