**London, UK -** While the EU grapples with its competitiveness gap, a new report by former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has highlighted a critical concern: the EU’s regulatory approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) is hindering innovation and leaving the region behind.
The report acknowledges the potential of AI to drive economic and societal progress, yet the EU’s current stance on data privacy and regulation is stifling the development of AI technologies within its borders.
“The EU has been blocking some of the biggest tech companies who are investing in AI from training its products on user data inside the bloc,” says James Price, a former government advisor. This results in less innovation and AI products that are less useful within the EU compared to those developed outside of it.
In contrast, the UK has chosen a more flexible approach. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has decided not to prevent user data training for AI models, allowing companies like Meta to develop and release exciting new AI products.
Sir Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs and former EU MEP, acknowledges the potential damage the EU’s current approach is causing, recognizing the importance of a less restrictive environment for AI innovation.
The UK, with its strong university talent, access to capital markets, and the presence of Google Deepmind, is well positioned to become a world leader in AI. Meanwhile, other countries, like the UAE, have made significant strides in embracing AI, highlighting the potential missed opportunities for the EU.
“If you don’t trust politicians not to mess up a bottle of fizzy pop, don’t trust them not to strangle the world-changing, life-saving tech of AI,” warns Price.
The EU’s overregulation in the AI sector is a growing concern, and its potential to stifle innovation poses a significant challenge for Europe’s future competitiveness in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
