**Derry, Northern Ireland -** The Taoiseach, Simon Harris, has stated that the Irish government remains open to contributing further funding to the redevelopment of Casement Park, despite the UK government’s decision to withdraw its support for the project.
On Friday, Northern Secretary Hilary Benn announced the UK government would not be funding the long-stalled rebuilding of the stadium, citing a “significant risk that it would not be built in time” for the Euro 2028 football tournament. This decision came after the cost of the project escalated dramatically from £180 million to £400 million.
Harris, who met with the GAA president on Sunday, expressed disappointment over the UK government’s announcement, stating that the Irish government stands by its commitment of €50 million. He expressed his intent to meet with the GAA in the coming days and engage with both the UK and Northern Ireland governments to work towards a resolution.
He acknowledged the widespread disappointment but emphasized the importance of moving forward. “What I’ve heard from everybody across the weekend is Casement is going to happen, Casement has to happen. The question is timelines and the question is, on what scale?” said Harris.
The First Minister of Northern Ireland, Michelle O’Neill, has called for a “Plan B” from the UK government, criticizing the timing of the announcement and highlighting the need for continued efforts towards building Casement Park.
The DUP’s Gordon Lyons, the Minister for Communities, echoed concerns regarding the timing of the announcement and the lack of transparency from the UK government.
Despite the funding uncertainties, Harris remains optimistic about future Anglo-Irish relations, emphasizing the “reset” in relations and his confidence in making progress on peace and prosperity across the islands. He reiterated his intention to work closely with the UK government to achieve these shared goals.
The future of Casement Park remains uncertain, with the next steps dependent on negotiations between the Irish and UK governments, as well as the GAA and the Northern Ireland Executive.
