A new survey by Atlassian reveals a gap in incident management practices between DevOps and ITSM teams, despite high levels of maturity in incident response. While nearly all organizations have procedures and tools in place for incident management, collaboration between development and operations teams remains a challenge.
The survey of 505 software developers, IT professionals, and decision-makers found that while 70% of respondents work in organizations where developers are responsible for deployments, only 22% conduct blameless post-mortems. Furthermore, only 60% of organizations include developers in incident management teams, and only 35% emphasize DevOps as a cultural shift that merges development and operations.
While most organizations utilize monitoring tools and conduct post-incident reviews, the survey highlights the need for deeper integration between DevOps and ITSM. Only 15% of respondents reported having cross-functional teams with both developers and operations staff, and only 30% highlighted the use of automation and CI/CD practices to streamline workflows.
The lack of integration is further demonstrated by the low adoption of configuration management databases (CMDBs) for managing IT environments, with only 60% of respondents reporting their use. This suggests a lack of centralized information and potentially hampers incident resolution efforts.
Despite these challenges, the survey indicates a high level of visibility into incident history and recent changes. However, only 55% of respondents reported having access to live service health information, highlighting a potential need for more real-time monitoring capabilities.
The survey concludes that while organizations have made significant strides in incident management, there is still room for improvement, particularly in the area of collaboration between DevOps and ITSM teams. As AI technology continues to evolve, integrating simulations into incident response training is expected to become easier, further enhancing incident management practices.
