Wed Sep 18 13:51:24 UTC 2024: ## Mendis Century Lifts Sri Lanka to 302/7 on Day 1 of Galle Test

**Galle, Sri Lanka:** Kamindu Mendis’ courageous century helped Sri Lanka reach a respectable 302/7 at the end of the first day’s play against New Zealand in the first Test at Galle. The hosts, after slumping to 106/4 just after lunch, were rescued by Mendis’ calm and confident performance, stitching a crucial 103-run stand with Kusal Mendis.

New Zealand’s fast bowler, William O’Rourke, had initially rattled the Sri Lankan top order, picking up two wickets as the hosts reached 88 at lunch. However, the pitch flattened out after tea, aiding the Sri Lankan batsmen.

While New Zealand’s spinners struggled to make an impact, O’Rourke continued his impressive performance, claiming a total of three wickets. Ajaz Patel, after a disappointing start, eventually got the crucial wicket of Kamindu Mendis, ending his century stand.

Sri Lanka’s final session saw a significant rise in scoring rate, ultimately propelling them past the 300-run mark. Kamindu Mendis, who now has a score of 50 or more in all of his 7 Tests, was the star of the show.

Despite the late breakthrough, Sri Lanka will be the happier of the two teams going into Day 2. The exciting first day witnessed ebbs and flows of momentum, leaving fans enthralled.

The second day’s play will begin at 4.30 am GMT, with New Zealand hoping to knock over the Sri Lankan tail early and gain a foothold in the match.
