Mon Sep 16 13:43:00 UTC 2024: ## Germany Seeks Expanded Trade with Kazakhstan, Cautious of Circumventing Russia Sanctions

**Astana, Kazakhstan** – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pledged to boost trade ties with Kazakhstan during his visit to the Central Asian nation, emphasizing the importance of ensuring such trade does not violate EU sanctions on Russia.

Both Scholz and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed interest in expanding trade in vital commodities such as oil, rare earths, lithium, and other raw materials. This meeting marks a growing trend of Western diplomacy in the region, traditionally considered part of Russia’s sphere of influence.

Scholz’s visit comes as Kazakhstan has taken over as the supplier of crude oil to Germany’s Schwedt refinery, replacing Russia. The visit follows recent threats by Russian President Vladimir Putin to restrict exports of metals like titanium to “unfriendly” countries.

The German Chancellor’s meeting with the Kazakh President precedes a larger gathering with all five Central Asian leaders. This increased Western engagement highlights the region’s growing strategic significance as a source of vital resources and a potential alternative to Russia for international trade.
