Tue Sep 17 05:51:00 UTC 2024: ## Russia Strikes Energy Infrastructure in Sumy, Ukraine, Causing Power Outages

**KYIV, Ukraine** – Russia launched a missile attack on energy infrastructure in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy on Tuesday, just hours after a drone strike on the region overnight. The attacks caused power outages for over 281,000 consumers and forced authorities to rely on backup power systems.

According to Sumy region governor Volodymyr Artiukh, at least four missiles were used in the attack on energy facilities. The energy ministry confirmed that the strikes resulted in a fire at a power substation. Power was partially restored later in the day.

While no casualties were reported in the city of Sumy, officials reported damage to infrastructure in the Konotop, Okhtyrka and Sumy districts as a result of the overnight drone strike.

The Ukrainian air force reported shooting down 34 out of 51 drones launched by Russia during Tuesday’s attack.

In addition to the attacks on Sumy, Russia dropped three guided bombs on the town of Hlukhiv, injuring two people and damaging private houses, public transport and a grain silo.

The attacks on energy infrastructure are part of a larger strategy by Russia to degrade Ukraine’s energy system ahead of winter, according to Ukrainian officials.

Meanwhile, Russian forces have been advancing in eastern Ukraine, while Ukrainian forces remain in the Russian region of Kursk following a cross-border incursion last month. Moscow reported that its air defense systems destroyed 16 Ukrainian drones over its Kursk and Bryansk regions overnight.
