Denbighshire County Council is on a mission to boost biodiversity with the establishment of a new tree nursery dedicated to cultivating native species, including a rare and historically significant tree known as the wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis).
This project, part of a larger initiative to combat the UK’s biodiversity crisis, aims to produce over 5,000 native trees and 5,000 native wildflower plants each year. The nursery, situated at Green Gates Farm, has already begun cultivating dozens of wild service trees from seed harvested from the county’s scant remaining 16 specimens.
Liam Blazey, senior biodiversity officer for Denbighshire Council, emphasizes the crucial role of this initiative in preserving threatened species. “From a biodiversity perspective, the UK is very impoverished,” he states. “This project is looking to restock some of these lost species and boost populations.”
The wild service tree holds historical significance as its fruit, known as chequers, was traditionally used to make beer and may have even given many pubs their names. Today, however, its ecological value takes center stage.
“A single tree is an entire ecosystem in itself,” Blazey notes, highlighting the tree’s role as a habitat for a wide range of creatures, from pollinators to mammals.
The project, fueled by a 2019 declaration of a climate and ecological emergency by the council, is part of a broader effort to restore biodiversity within the county. Other initiatives include creating wildflower meadows in various locations.
The nursery’s work, coupled with these initiatives, is a beacon of hope in the face of dwindling biodiversity. Sam Brown, a tree nursery assistant, emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stating, “It is really important that we sort our biodiversity out, because we are so nature depleted.”
The project serves as a reminder of the vital role that even small initiatives can play in tackling the global biodiversity crisis. By nurturing a diverse range of native species, Denbighshire Council is taking steps towards a future where these vital components of our ecosystem thrive once again.
