Tue Sep 17 06:20:17 UTC 2024: ## Portugal Battles Widespread Forest Fires Amidst Extreme Heat

**Lisbon, Portugal** – Portugal is facing a challenging battle against widespread forest fires, fueled by scorching temperatures and strong winds. As of Monday, over 5,000 firefighters are engaged in tackling 26 active blazes across the country. The situation has been particularly severe in the northern Aveiro region, where a series of fires erupted over the weekend.

Tragically, the fires have claimed the lives of two individuals. A 28-year-old Brazilian forestry worker died after being caught in the flames while retrieving tools, while a volunteer firefighter succumbed to a heart attack during a break.

Twelve firefighters have also sustained injuries, two of them critically, while approximately 70 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes. The fires have caused significant damage, including the destruction of homes and disruptions to traffic on several motorways.

Despite the severity of the situation, national civil protection commander Andre Fernandes assures that “the situation is not out of control, but it is very complex.” He anticipates a difficult day ahead, with challenging conditions persisting into Tuesday.

While Portugal has experienced fewer wildfires this year compared to previous years, the country remains on high alert. Scientists attribute the increase in wildfire risk to rising global temperatures, exacerbated by human-caused fossil fuel emissions. The Iberian Peninsula, particularly vulnerable to climate change, is experiencing prolonged heatwaves and droughts, creating ideal conditions for blazes.

Following deadly wildfires in 2017, Portugal has significantly increased funding for fire prevention and firefighting efforts. However, the current fires underscore the ongoing challenges posed by climate change and the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures.
