Wed Sep 18 05:24:00 UTC 2024: ## Bowness Police Express Concern Over New Bar Proposal

Bowness-on-Windermere is facing a potential increase in anti-social behaviour and violent crime as Cumbria Constabulary raises serious concerns over a proposed new bar in the town.

The police force has responded to a planning application by Bowness Bay Investments Ltd, which seeks to convert the historic Laurel Cottage guest house into a bar. While the applicant claims the new establishment will complement existing businesses and provide a “traditional” atmosphere, the police are worried about the impact on already strained resources.

Citing a surge in violent crime and public order offences in the past few years, attributed in part to the growth of licensed premises in the town, the Constabulary highlights the pressure on their limited staff. They point to the fact that in 2023, Windermere Police Station dealt with 334 violent crime and public order offences, a significant increase from 268 in 2021.

The police have also expressed concern over the lack of safety and security details in the application, specifically the absence of information regarding CCTV and external lighting. They urge the applicant to engage with them to discuss the potential impact of the new bar and meet the force’s expectations regarding responsible premises management.

The proposed conversion of Laurel Cottage into a bar has sparked debate within the community, with the police highlighting the need for careful consideration of the potential consequences. While the applicant claims the bar will provide a boost to the local economy and enhance the historical character of the building, the police remain cautious, emphasizing the importance of addressing public safety concerns before granting permission for the new establishment.
