Wed Sep 18 05:09:31 UTC 2024: ## Pitru Paksha 2024: Honoring Ancestors from September 17th to October 2nd

**New Delhi, India** – The annual Pitru Paksha, a fortnight dedicated to honoring ancestors, will commence on September 17th and conclude on October 2nd, 2024. This period, falling during the Ashwin Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight of the Hindu lunar month Ashwin), is a time for remembrance, gratitude, and specific rituals.

The first day of Pitru Paksha, known as “Pratipada,” holds special significance as it marks the day for performing the “shraddha” ceremony for ancestors who passed away on the Pratipada Tithi according to the Hindu calendar. This ceremony involves offering water mixed with black sesame seeds (“tarpan”) and rice balls (“pind daan”) to the deceased, symbolizing their nourishment.

While traditionally, the head of the household, or a male family member, performs the “shraddha,” in modern times, women are also actively involved in the rituals. The ceremonies are conducted under the guidance of a pandit (priest), with family members offering prayers for the peace of their departed loved ones.

Pitru Paksha necessitates adherence to certain customs and practices. During this period, individuals are encouraged to maintain a sattvic diet, avoiding onions, garlic, meat, alcohol, and excessive dairy. White flowers with a mild fragrance are preferred for offerings, while strong-smelling flowers are discouraged.

The rituals should be performed facing the south direction, and reciting the Bhagavad Gita daily is considered auspicious. It is also important to remember that performing “shraddha” under duress or financial constraint is discouraged.

By adhering to these guidelines and performing the prescribed rituals, families can ensure a meaningful and respectful observance of Pitru Paksha, honoring the memory and contributions of their ancestors.
