**ABUJA, NIGERIA** – In a significant development for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party’s Governors’ Forum and National Working Committee (NWC) have decided to remove IIiya Umar Damagum as the acting National Chairman. The decision, made following a meeting on Tuesday night, stems from the party’s belief that Damagum’s position is a “constitutional aberration.”
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who chairs the Governors’ Forum, explained that the party’s constitution dictates that any vacancy in a leadership position should revert to the zone where it was created. Damagum, a staunch supporter of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, had assumed the acting chairmanship after Iyorchia Ayu was removed in June 2023.
The PDP governors have decided to instead give the North Central zone the opportunity to complete Ayu’s term, citing a precedent set after the resignation of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, when the North East was allowed to fill the vacancy.
This decision comes amidst a leadership crisis within the PDP, marked by tensions between the Wike faction and the party’s governors. It remains to be seen how this move will affect the ongoing power struggles within the party.
