Wed Sep 18 10:52:33 UTC 2024: ## India Introduces NPS Vatsalya: A Retirement Scheme for Minors
**New Delhi, September 18, 2024:** In a move aimed at encouraging early savings for retirement, India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the expansion of the National Pension System (NPS) to include minors. This new scheme, dubbed “NPS Vatsalya,” allows parents and guardians to open retirement accounts for children, offering them the benefits of long-term compounding and a head start on building a substantial retirement corpus.
“The pension scheme for children is being launched, giving a sense of financial freedom,” said Deepak Mohanty, Chairman of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). “Parents can start saving for their children’s future, and once they reach adulthood, the account will seamlessly transition into a regular NPS account, allowing them to continue contributing and benefiting from the scheme.”
**Key Differences Between NPS and NPS Vatsalya:**
* **Eligibility:** While the standard NPS is open to individuals between the ages of 18 and 75, NPS Vatsalya allows parents or guardians to open accounts for minors.
* **Conversion:** Once the child turns 18, the NPS Vatsalya account automatically converts into a regular NPS account, allowing them to continue contributing till the age of 75.
* **Compounding Benefits:** NPS Vatsalya provides an extended period for compounding, allowing for a significantly larger retirement corpus compared to individuals starting their NPS contributions later in life.
**How NPS Vatsalya Works:**
* **Contribution:** Individuals can make both lump sum and monthly contributions to the scheme. The minimum annual contribution is Rs. 1,000.
* **Investment Options:** Subscribers can choose from a variety of equity and debt schemes, including NPS mutual funds that track the Nifty 50 index.
* **Retirement Benefits:** At age 60, account holders can withdraw up to 60% of their accumulated corpus and must purchase an annuity with 40% of the funds to secure a regular pension income.
**Financial Experts Suggest:**
With the benefits of early compounding, NPS Vatsalya offers a powerful tool for parents seeking to secure their children’s financial future. While the minimum contribution is low, consistent contributions over a longer period can lead to a significantly higher retirement nest egg.
