**St. John’s, Newfoundland** – The U.S. Coast Guard has released the first video footage of the Titan submersible wreckage, providing a grim visual of the implosion that claimed the lives of all five crew members in June 2023. The footage was shown during the first day of a two-week hearing investigating the tragedy and potential failings of OceanGate, the company that operated the submersible.
Coast Guard officials confirmed that human remains were recovered from the wreckage site on the ocean floor, approximately 330 yards from the bow of the Titanic. DNA analysis positively identified the five victims, whose remains were transported ashore and are now in the custody of the Air Force medical examiner.
The Titan, en route to view the Titanic wreckage, imploded during its descent on June 18, 2023. The hearing aims to determine the cause of the implosion and identify measures to prevent future tragedies. Several former OceanGate employees have already testified, alleging that their concerns regarding the submersible’s safety were dismissed by the company.
Text messages exchanged between the Titan crew and the support ship Polar Prince during the final dive reveal a series of communication exchanges regarding the submersible’s depth and weight. One of the last messages from the Titan crew, just before the implosion, stated, “all good here,” according to a visual re-creation presented during the hearing.
The Coast Guard’s Marine Board of Investigation, the highest level of marine casualty investigation, will continue its inquiry for the next two weeks. Upon completion, recommendations will be submitted to the Coast Guard commandant. The National Transportation Safety Board is also conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
