Tue Sep 17 06:41:00 UTC 2024: ## Typhoon Yagi Devastates Myanmar, Leaving 226 Dead and Thousands Displaced

**Naypyitaw, Myanmar** – The death toll from flooding in Myanmar triggered by Typhoon Yagi has reached a devastating 226, with 77 people still missing, according to state media reports. The storm, the strongest to hit Asia this year, has wreaked havoc across the country, impacting an estimated 631,000 people.

The flooding has caused widespread damage, with over 150,000 homes inundated and nearly 260,000 hectares of crops destroyed. Key cities like Naypyitaw and Mandalay have been severely affected, along with parts of Shan state.

The disaster has severely hampered aid efforts, with blocked roads and damaged bridges hindering the delivery of much-needed supplies. Food, drinking water, shelter, and clothing are urgently required, with 388 relief camps opened across nine regions and states.

The situation is particularly dire for displaced people living in camps, including children, who were already facing limited services due to ongoing conflict following the 2021 military coup.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Yagi has also caused significant damage in neighboring countries. Vietnam has reported 292 deaths and 38 missing, with over 230,000 homes damaged and 280,000 hectares of crops destroyed. In Thailand, the death toll has risen to 15, with the government announcing a financial aid package for affected households.

As the storm continues to impact the region, the full extent of the damage is yet to be determined. Rescue and relief efforts are underway, but the scale of the disaster poses a major challenge for authorities and humanitarian organizations.
