Tue Sep 17 04:36:00 UTC 2024: ## Netanyahu Expands War Goals, Lebanon Reels from Deadly Pager Explosions

**Beirut, Tel Aviv (DW)** – The conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announcing an expansion of Israel’s war goals and Lebanon grappling with the aftermath of deadly pager explosions.

Netanyahu stated that the Israeli government has updated its war objectives to include the safe return of residents to Israel’s north, a region under threat from Hezbollah, a Lebanese political and military group. This expansion comes amid ongoing cross-border fire between the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah, who are allied with Hamas.

Meanwhile, Lebanon is reeling from a series of explosions involving handheld pagers, which resulted in the deaths of at least eight people and over 2,750 injuries, according to the Lebanese Health Minister. The blasts, which occurred in the suburbs of Beirut and other parts of the country, reportedly targeted members of Hezbollah.

Multiple news agencies are reporting that the pagers belonged to Hezbollah members, with a Hezbollah official stating that the explosions were a result of a security operation targeting the devices. The official, who spoke anonymously, accused Israel of being behind the incident, claiming that new pagers with lithium batteries were responsible for the explosions.

In light of the escalating tensions, several airlines, including Lufthansa and Air France, have suspended flights to Tel Aviv, Tehran, and Beirut until Thursday, citing security concerns. Lufthansa has also announced that its flights will avoid Israeli and Iranian airspace during the same period.

The international community continues to push for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to visit the Middle East on Tuesday, meeting with local officials to discuss efforts to secure the release of hostages, alleviate Palestinian suffering, and establish broader regional security. However, cease-fire attempts have thus far been unsuccessful, with both sides reportedly unwilling to compromise.

Meanwhile, a group of German media organizations, including Deutsche Welle, have signed an open letter to the Israeli and Egyptian governments, demanding journalistic access to the Gaza Strip. They argue that the near-total exclusion of international media from the conflict is unprecedented and impedes human rights reporting.
