**Chelm, Poland** – A recent renovation project at the Palace of the Uniate Bishops in Chelm, Poland, has unearthed a chilling discovery: the remains of two medieval children, one of whom appears to have been buried as a “vampire.”
Archaeologists working on the project discovered the skeletons while removing tree roots. One of the children, who was beheaded and buried face down with heavy stones placed on their torso, shows clear signs of “anti-vampire” practices common during the Middle Ages.
The burial was located in gypsum soil, oriented along an east-west axis, aligning with known burial customs of the era. However, the lack of a coffin and any funerary items, combined with the unusual burial method, suggest a deliberate attempt to prevent the child from returning as a “revenant,” a type of undead creature.
“The burial clearly shows signs of anti-vampire practices, which were aimed at stopping the dead from rising again,” said Stanisław Gołub, the archaeologist leading the excavation.
The discovery is significant because it provides concrete evidence of vampire-related beliefs in medieval Poland. While seemingly far-fetched today, the fear of vampirism was widespread in the Middle Ages, particularly in Eastern Europe. This fear often stemmed from a lack of understanding of diseases like tuberculosis, which were attributed to supernatural forces.
The Lublin Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, who posted about the discovery on Facebook, confirmed that further analysis will be conducted to determine the children’s gender, age, and cause of death.
