Mon Sep 16 15:43:46 UTC 2024: ## Manchester City Faces 10-Week Hearing Over Financial Misconduct Allegations
Manchester City’s legal team, led by Lord Pannick KC, arrived at London’s International Dispute Resolution Centre on Monday to face a grueling 10-week hearing over 115 charges of financial misconduct brought by the Premier League. The charges, dating back to the 2009-10 season, allege that City falsified financial information, violated UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, and failed to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation.
The hearing, conducted privately by an independent commission, could result in severe consequences for the reigning Premier League champions, including a hefty points deduction, stripping of titles, or even expulsion from the league. City, who deny any wrongdoing, maintain they have “irrefutable evidence” to support their stance.
The charges cover a range of financial irregularities, including misrepresenting sponsorship revenue, failing to disclose managerial and player compensation, and breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) rules. The Premier League is represented by lawyer Adam Lewis.
The outcome of the hearing, which will be held over the next 10 weeks, is expected before the end of the current season. While the independent commission’s verdict is final, either side can appeal to an appeals panel.
The hearing comes after City were banned from European competition for two years in 2020 for breaking UEFA’s FFP rules, but they successfully overturned the ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Despite the seriousness of the accusations, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed confidence in the club’s innocence, stating, “Everyone is innocent until proven guilty.” The outcome of this hearing could have a significant impact on the club’s future, both domestically and internationally.
