Pop star Justin Timberlake has been sentenced to community service after pleading guilty to a lesser charge stemming from his June drunk driving arrest in the Hamptons. The 43-year-old singer was initially charged with driving while intoxicated but ultimately avoided jail time, pleading guilty to a non-criminal traffic violation of driving while impaired.
Timberlake will serve 25 to 40 hours of community service at a non-profit of his choice in Sag Harbor and pay a fine of up to $500.
The Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) organization expressed deep disappointment with the plea deal, stating that it does not support such arrangements in impaired driving cases, arguing that justice should be fully served for such a serious crime.
MADD spokesperson emphasized that impaired driving is a dangerous and reckless choice that puts lives at risk and urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to quickly implement lifesaving anti-drunk driving technology in new vehicles.
Timberlake apologized for his actions, acknowledging his mistake and urging others to avoid driving after drinking, even if it’s just one drink. He emphasized the importance of using alternative transportation options such as ride-sharing services or taxis.
While Timberlake avoided jail time, his case highlights the ongoing issue of drunk driving and the need for stricter penalties and preventive measures to reduce its occurrence.
