Wed Sep 18 03:58:30 UTC 2024: ## Bayern Munich Shatters Champions League Records in 9-2 Rout of Dinamo Zagreb

**MUNICH** – Harry Kane set a new Champions League record on Tuesday, scoring four goals to bring his total for English players in the competition to 33, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s previous mark of 30. The prolific striker’s performance was just one highlight of a record-breaking night for Bayern Munich, who crushed Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in the opening round of the new Champions League format.

Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot, equalling Rooney’s record, before surpassing it with a rebound goal. He added two more penalties to take his total to 12 goals since joining Bayern a year ago.

“To score all those goals in the end was a great night,” Kane said. “After the second penalty, I didn’t really know what to do with the third one, but thankfully I was able to put it away.”

Bayern’s nine-goal haul also set a new record for most goals in a single Champions League game, with Raphael Guerreiro, Michael Olise, Leroy Sane, and Leon Goretzka contributing to the rout. Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara scored for the visitors.

“He is motivated, and for me as a coach it is easier because if you have a top player who is himself so motivated, it makes things so much easier,” said Bayern manager Vincent Kompany.

Kompany also praised Kane’s leadership qualities: “He is a leader, captain of the national team. Players like him, they know they have to rise at these moments, and that is what he is doing.”

While the scoreline suggests a dominant performance, Kompany was not entirely satisfied, criticizing his team’s lapse in concentration after halftime. “We scored nine, but we conceded two goals. We conceded those goals because we were a step too late,” he said. “Still, we stayed calmed and then had a good evening.”

Another record was broken during the match, as Thomas Müller came on as a substitute to make his 152nd Champions League appearance for Bayern. This surpassed the previous record of 151 held by former Barcelona player Xavi Hernandez.

Kane’s impressive form continues, with 53 goals in 50 games for Bayern since his arrival. He has also scored nine goals in his last three matches, including two for England against Finland in his 100th international appearance and a hat trick for Bayern against Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga.
