The upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars is facing backlash after casting Anna Delvey, a convicted con artist, as a contestant. Delvey, who was found guilty of grand larceny for scamming $275,000 by posing as a wealthy socialite, has sparked outrage among fans.
Despite serving four years in prison and currently being under house arrest, Delvey is able to compete on the show due to her limited travel restrictions. She will be monitored by an ankle bracelet, which Julianne Hough, one of the show’s hosts, confirmed has already been bedazzled.
Hough, who initially joined the show as a professional dancer, addressed the controversy during an appearance on the Call It What It Is podcast. While acknowledging the public’s disapproval, she expressed excitement about Delvey’s participation.
“It’s controversial for sure,” Hough said. “But, again, in a way that, like, allows people to show their most true self. So this is a great opportunity for her. But I just love it so much because I was obsessed with the show [Inventing Anna] and Julia Garner just crushed it. There’s so much fun to be had with it and she plays into it.”
“Inventing Anna,” a Netflix series based on Delvey’s story, portrays her as a charismatic yet manipulative individual.
Despite the controversy, Delvey joins a diverse cast of celebrities, including Olympic athlete Stephen Nedoroscik, actress Tori Spelling, and Bachelor Nation’s Joey Graziadei and Jenn Tran. The show’s producers are undoubtedly hoping the controversy will attract viewers, even as some fans are disappointed by the casting choice.
