Tue Sep 17 16:45:27 UTC 2024: ## Apple Releases iOS 18 with 33 Security Fixes and New Features
Apple has released iOS 18, packed with 33 security fixes and a suite of new features for iPhone users. The update comes alongside iOS 17.7, a security-only update for those who prefer to wait for iOS 18’s initial bugs to be ironed out. While iOS 17.7 includes 16 security fixes, iOS 18 boasts more than double that number, addressing critical vulnerabilities in core system components like WebKit and the Kernel.
Among the notable fixes are two vulnerabilities in the Kernel that could allow malicious apps to access Bluetooth without permission, and a flaw in the Sandbox that could lead to sensitive data leaks. iOS 18 also patches several WebKit vulnerabilities that could allow attackers to exploit malicious websites for cross-site scripting and data exfiltration.
Apple has also introduced new security features, most notably a password manager app that rivals third-party solutions like 1Password. Users can also now hide sensitive apps, requiring Face ID authentication for access, enhancing privacy on shared devices.
While most iPhones compatible with iOS 17 can run iOS 18, advanced AI features will be exclusive to iPhone 15 and later models.
Experts recommend updating to iOS 18 for increased security, but users can choose to wait for the initial kinks to be resolved with iOS 17.7. Ultimately, the choice between iOS 17 and iOS 18 depends on individual user preference and risk tolerance.
