**Kolkata, India** – The brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata has led to the dismissal of the city’s police chief and top health ministry officials. The doctor’s body was found at a state-run hospital on August 9th, sparking widespread protests across India.
Protests in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state, have been particularly intense, with doctors demanding safer working conditions and justice for the victim. Following a meeting with medical professionals on Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and two health department officials.
“We have agreed to remove the director of health services and director of medical colleges,” Banerjee told reporters. “We have also removed the Kolkata Police Commissioner, as demanded by the junior doctors.”
Despite the dismissals, protests continue in Kolkata, with doctors refusing to return to work until investigations into the case are complete. “We reached an agreement on certain points, but disagreement remains,” said Aniket Mahato, spokesperson for the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front protest group.
One man has been detained in connection with the murder, but the state government has faced criticism over its handling of the investigation. The gruesome nature of the attack has drawn comparisons to the 2012 Delhi bus gang rape, which sparked national outrage and led to significant security reforms.
The Supreme Court of India has ordered a national task force to examine how to improve security for healthcare workers in the wake of the doctor’s murder. The incident has once again highlighted the pervasive issue of violence against women in India.
