**GEORGE TOWN, Sept 17** – Penang is facing a severe storm situation with widespread destruction across the island and mainland. Hundreds of trees have been uprooted across over 130 locations, while floods have been reported in 71 locations.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, citing the Malaysia Meteorological Department, warned that the storms are expected to continue until tomorrow. He revealed that fallen trees were reported in 90 locations on Sunday, causing damage to three houses and eight cars.
On Monday, nine more locations reported downed trees, while today alone, 43 locations on the island have been affected.
The mainland has also been hit hard, with fallen trees reported in 30 locations. Heavy rainfall has caused flash floods in 71 locations on the mainland, with 43 in central Seberang Prai and 28 in south Seberang Prai.
Chow urged residents and tourists to exercise caution while travelling until the storms subside.
Meanwhile, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng reported that the clan jetties along Weld Quay were damaged by strong waves. Planks were broken, and volunteers have been deployed to monitor and conduct repairs as needed. Visitors are advised to avoid the jetties and coastal areas during high tides.
The Fire and Rescue Department reported rescuing two disabled women in their 50s from a flooded house in Taman Nibong Tebal.
