Hong Kong martial arts star Norman Chui Siu Keung, known for his roles in classic films and television series, passed away on September 1st in Beijing from oesophageal cancer. The news was confirmed by veteran actor and spokesperson for the Hong Kong Film Workers Association, Tin Kai Man.

Chui’s death shocked fans and colleagues, but the tragedy took a further turn when his wife, a Chinese dancer 30 years his junior, died from a heart attack while handling funeral arrangements just days later. The couple had been married for 19 years and had a daughter and an 11-year-old son.

Chui’s sudden death was attributed to the older generation’s reluctance to undergo health checks. Tin shared that Chui, who was active in the entertainment circle, was unaware of his illness.

Chui gained immense fame in the 1970s and 1980s with his unique martial arts style and exceptional acting skills. He starred in popular television series like “The Sword of the Third Young Master” (1977) and “Reincarnated” (1979). His villainous role in Stephen Chow’s 1992 comedy “King of Beggars” further cemented his status in the industry.

Beyond his career, Chui was known for his complex romantic history. He was married three times and had a high-profile seven-year affair with former actress Shirley Yim, leading to the birth of his son and daughter.

Chui’s death marks a significant loss for the Hong Kong film industry and fans around the world.
