**Gandhinagar, Gujarat:** Hindalco Industries Ltd. has announced a ₹2450 crore investment in two copper projects in Gujarat. This investment includes the construction of India’s first copper and electronic waste (e-waste) recycling facility in Dahej, South Gujarat.
The recycling plant, expected to go operational in phases, will have an initial investment of ₹2000 crore. This investment will be scaled up four times in the coming years. The facility is anticipated to process 300-350 kilo tonnes of scrap and e-waste annually, recovering 200 kilo tonnes of copper, including silver, gold and other precious metals. This will significantly reduce the company’s reliance on imported copper concentrates, which currently accounts for 90% of its copper supply.
In addition to the recycling facility, Hindalco is also establishing a ₹450 crore unit in Vadodara for the manufacture of copper tubes. These tubes are used in air conditioners and other refrigeration systems. The Waghodia plant, planned to be the largest in India, will have an initial production capacity of 25,000 tonnes of copper tubes. The company plans to expand the plant to 75,000 tonnes in the coming years, requiring a total investment of ₹1500 crore.
This move by Hindalco aligns with the growing demand for copper in India. The company is expanding its upstream capacity at Dahej to cater to this demand, adding an additional 250-280 kilo tonnes of capacity. This will increase the company’s overall capacity by 50-60%.
The company is also investing in special copper alloys for use in high-speed rail projects, indicating a commitment to future technological advancements in India.
