Worthing Borough Council will continue its fight against a controversial development of 475 homes on Chatsmore Farm, located in the green gap between Worthing and Ferring. A public inquiry, starting Tuesday at Worthing Town Hall, will re-examine the Planning Inspectorate’s decision to approve the development, which was initially rejected by the council in March 2021.
The council’s legal challenge against the Planning Inspectorate’s decision was successful in the High Court, leading to the re-examination. The council argues that the development would have a negative impact on the South Downs National Park.
Persimmon Homes, the developer, maintains that the initial appeal was successful on a technicality and insists on the need for affordable housing in the area. The developer emphasizes the high demand for housing in Worthing, citing the “exceptionally high” unmet need.
The public inquiry will run over several days, with sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and then again from September 24th to 26th, and October 1st to 3rd. Residents are encouraged to attend and voice their opinions on the development.
The outcome of the public inquiry will determine the fate of the Chatsmore Farm development, which has been a source of significant local controversy.
