The Jewish Chronicle (JC), the oldest Jewish newspaper in the UK, has been embroiled in controversy after it was revealed that several articles by freelance reporter Elon Perry contained fabricated quotes from Israeli officials.
One article, now removed, claimed to have discovered a document from Gaza detailing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s plan to escape with Israeli captives using the Philadelphi Corridor to reach Iran. However, the Israeli army denied knowledge of such a document, and several Israeli outlets questioned Perry’s identity and professional background.
The similarity between Perry’s claims and statements made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has led to speculation of a broader disinformation campaign.
Following mounting criticism, the JC removed Perry’s articles from its website. Several prominent contributors, including Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland, journalist David Aaronovitch, comedian and writer David Baddiel, and The Sunday Times writer Hadley Freeman, have resigned in protest.
Freedland called the situation a “disgrace” and accused the JC of “publishing fabricated stories and showing only the thinnest form of contrition.” He further criticized the paper for becoming “a partisan, ideological instrument, its judgements political rather than journalistic.”
Freeman stated that she and her fellow columnists felt editorial standards had not been applied to Perry due to his alleged ideological alignment with the editorial board. She expressed concern that the JC was increasingly representing a right-wing perspective rather than the diverse views of British Jews.
Perry, meanwhile, has dismissed the criticisms as motivated by “jealousy” and claimed that his previous work was published in Hebrew.
The JC editor, Jake Wallis Simons, admitted that the newspaper had been “deceived” by Perry and has cut all ties with him.
This scandal has shaken the Jewish Chronicle and raised serious questions about its journalistic standards and its commitment to representing the diverse voices of the British Jewish community.
