Tue Sep 17 04:53:00 UTC 2024: ## Deadly Floods Devastate Myanmar, Adding to Humanitarian Crisis

**Yangon, Myanmar** – Torrential rains brought on by Typhoon Yagi have resulted in devastating floods across Myanmar, claiming the lives of at least 226 people in just over a week. The storm, which battered the central provinces of the war-torn country, has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis already facing millions of people.

The areas hardest hit include the second-largest city of Mandalay, the capital Naypyitaw, and parts of Shan state, which has been embroiled in heavy fighting in recent months. With 77 people still missing, the disaster has added to the already dire situation in a country struggling with ongoing conflict and a military junta.

According to the United Nations, approximately one-third of Myanmar’s 55 million people are in need of humanitarian aid. The floods have compounded the challenges faced by many, particularly those displaced by conflict.

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern over the accessibility of flood-affected areas, with damaged roads, disrupted telecom networks, and limited services making it difficult to reach those in need. The floods have particularly impacted camps for displaced people, where children are already struggling with limited resources.

The storm has caused widespread devastation across Southeast Asia, with Vietnam reporting 292 deaths and Thailand experiencing heavy flooding in northern cities. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Thailand has reported at least 45 deaths from flooding and mudslides since last month.

The international community is urging urgent action to provide relief and support to those affected by the floods in Myanmar and across Southeast Asia.
