**Ahmedabad, India:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a scathing attack on unnamed critics, widely interpreted as a veiled response to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks in the United States. Addressing a gathering in Gujarat, Modi accused individuals driven by hatred of “defaming” India and attempting to “break up” the country.
The Prime Minister’s comments came amidst a heated exchange between the BJP and the Congress, fueled by Gandhi’s remarks at events attended by the Indian diaspora in the US. Gandhi had criticized the BJP’s ideology, questioning its inclusiveness and citing the example of Sikhs facing restrictions on religious practices like wearing turbans and kada.
While not naming Gandhi directly, Modi accused individuals of acting against the country’s interests and targeting its unity. He also emphasized the importance of national unity and highlighted the alleged attempts by these critics to “defame India and Gujarat.”
Modi’s speech also served as a campaign rally ahead of the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. He criticized the Congress and its ally, the National Conference, for promising to restore the special status for Jammu and Kashmir, which was revoked by the BJP government in 2019.
The Prime Minister’s comments come on the heels of strong reactions from Union Ministers, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who condemned Gandhi’s remarks. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar also criticized Gandhi for his “behavior” and alleged disregard for the Constitution.
With the first phase of voting for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections set to begin on Wednesday, Modi’s speech appears to be aimed at galvanizing support for the BJP in the region and other poll-bound states. His comments, while indirectly targeting Gandhi, are likely to further intensify the already heated political discourse in India.
