Wed Sep 18 09:29:13 UTC 2024: ## Young Chartered Accountant Dies After Allegedly Being Overworked at EY India
**Pune, India** – A recent tragedy has sparked concerns about work culture at EY India, a leading professional services firm. Anna Sebastian Perayil, a young chartered accountant from Kerala, passed away nearly four months after joining her first job at EY India in Pune. Her mother, Anita Augustine, alleges that her daughter was pushed to the brink by an excessive workload, leading to physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion.
According to a letter purportedly written by Ms. Augustine to Rajiv Memani, Chairman of EY India, Perayil, a brilliant student who excelled in her academics, started experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, and stress shortly after joining the company. The letter further states that Perayil was driven to work tirelessly, even on her convocation day, to meet unrealistic expectations from her superiors.
Ms. Augustine also claims that her daughter was experiencing chest pain, which doctors attributed to her hectic schedule. Despite her health concerns, Perayil insisted on going to work, fearing that she would be denied leave.
The letter expresses frustration at the lack of support from EY India, alleging that no one from the company attended Perayil’s funeral or reached out to her family following the tragedy.
This incident has sparked outrage among industry professionals who are raising their voices against alleged toxic work culture at EY India.
EY India has not yet commented on the allegations.
