**MANILA** – Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte may face charges of obstruction of justice for allegedly aiding fugitive pastor Apollo Quiboloy, according to a Philippine lawmaker.
Quiboloy, founder of the Kingdom of Jesus mega-church, surrendered to authorities on September 8 after months on the run. He faces multiple charges in both the Philippines and the United States, including sexual abuse, child abuse, and human trafficking.
Duterte, a known close supporter of Quiboloy, has publicly defended the pastor, calling the charges “political harassment”. However, his own statements and actions have raised suspicions of involvement in Quiboloy’s evasion of justice.
Rep. France Castro, a critic of Duterte, questioned the DOJ budget sponsor, Rep. Raul Angelo Bongalon, about the possibility of obstruction of justice charges against Duterte during a recent parliamentary debate. Bongalon stated that such charges are possible if the elements of the crime are met.
Duterte’s actions that have sparked the potential probe include publicly declaring knowledge of Quiboloy’s whereabouts and being appointed administrator of the Kingdom of Jesus Church’s properties. These actions, coupled with his outspoken defense of Quiboloy, have led several lawmakers to call for an investigation into his alleged role in hiding the fugitive pastor.
While Duterte’s camp has dismissed the allegations, the rivalry between the Duterte clan and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s camp, coupled with the sensational nature of the Quiboloy trial, could push for a more rigorous investigation into the former president’s potential involvement.
The investigation into Duterte’s potential obstruction of justice in the Quiboloy case remains ongoing.
