Tue Sep 17 05:45:29 UTC 2024: ## NASA and SpaceX Launch Crew-9 Mission with Two Empty Seats

**Cape Canaveral, FL -** NASA and SpaceX are preparing for the launch of the Crew-9 mission to the International Space Station (ISS), set for Wednesday, September 25. This mission will mark a unique situation, as two seats aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft will remain empty.

The reason for this unexpected arrangement stems from the recent challenges faced by Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. The Starliner’s first crewed flight in June experienced issues, forcing NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore to remain aboard the ISS for an extended eight-month stay.

After troubleshooting efforts, NASA decided to return the Starliner to Earth without its crew. This resulted in Williams and Wilmore needing a ride home, which they will now receive on the Crew Dragon launching next week.

Initially, Crew-9 was scheduled to carry four astronauts, but due to the Starliner situation, NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Stephanie Wilson were removed from the mission. Their places have been filled by NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos astronaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.

Upon completion of their six-month mission, Hague and Gorbunov will return to Earth along with Williams and Wilmore, marking the conclusion of one of the most extraordinary and unforeseen missions in ISS history.

This situation highlights the dynamic nature of space exploration and the collaborative efforts needed to address unforeseen challenges. NASA and SpaceX are working together to ensure a safe and successful return for the astronauts and continue their vital research at the ISS.
