**LONDON, UK -** Scientists are reporting the emergence of a new Covid-19 variant, XEC, which is rapidly spreading globally and may soon become the dominant strain. First detected in Germany in June 2024, XEC has since been identified in the UK, US, Denmark, and other countries.

XEC, a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant, possesses mutations that could enhance its transmission, particularly during the autumn months. The antibody was isolated from the plasma of vaccinated individuals who experienced breakthrough infections.
