Tue Sep 17 06:55:19 UTC 2024: ## Philippines Withdraws Coast Guard Vessel from Chinese Reef After Failed Resupply Attempts

**BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua)** – After nearly five months of illegally anchoring in the lagoon of Xianbin Jiao, part of China’s Nansha Qundao, the Philippine coast guard vessel MRRV-9701 withdrew from the reef on Saturday and returned to a Philippine port.

The withdrawal comes after multiple resupply attempts by the Philippine side were thwarted by China’s “lawful and professional management and control measures”. China had repeatedly demanded the vessel’s immediate withdrawal, citing its infringement on Chinese territorial sovereignty.

While the withdrawal is seen as a positive step towards de-escalating tensions in the area, concerns remain about the Philippines’ long-term intentions. Philippine officials have reportedly stated that another ship will replace the MRRV-9701 immediately and that the vessel will resume its mission after resupply and repair.

China has accused the Philippines of fabricating the excuse of monitoring Chinese land reclamation activities to justify its presence at Xianbin Jiao, claiming the country aims to establish a long-term presence and occupy the reef. This, China argues, is a deceitful tactic similar to the Philippines’ grounding of a military vessel at Ren’ai Jiao in 1999, which has remained there ever since.

China maintains unwavering sovereignty over Nansha Qundao and its surrounding waters, including Ren’ai Jiao and Xianbin Jiao. The Chinese coast guard will continue to uphold its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests by carrying out law enforcement activities in the area.

The incident has raised further concerns about the potential for future provocations and disputes in the South China Sea. While China and ASEAN countries recently agreed to maintain peace and stability in the region, the Philippines’ actions contradict this commitment.

China has urged the Philippines to fully and effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) by working collaboratively with Beijing to uphold its seriousness and effectiveness. It remains to be seen whether the Philippines will choose to engage in constructive dialogue or continue its provocative actions in the South China Sea.
