**Vancouver, Canada** – Canada’s expanded Trans Mountain pipeline, now fully operational, is proving its worth by opening up new markets for Canadian crude in Asia. The project, which faced significant opposition and was ultimately acquired by the Canadian government, has resulted in a noticeable shift in oil flows, with Asian nations like China, India, and South Korea becoming major buyers of Canadian oil.
Since the pipeline reached full capacity in June, Canadian oil producers have shipped an extra 28 million barrels of crude from the west coast, primarily to Asia. Simultaneously, shipments from the US Gulf Coast have declined by 1.68 million barrels. China, in particular, has seen a surge in Canadian oil imports, taking in an additional 8.24 million barrels, most of which were shipped directly from the west coast.
“More barrels are going off the dock and going to Asian markets as expected,” said Ian Anderson, former CEO of Trans Mountain. “Asia was the market that was highly sought after.”
The pipeline expansion nearly tripled the capacity of the system, which now carries 890,000 barrels per day from Edmonton to a port near Vancouver. The project’s success in diversifying Canada’s oil market is a testament to the government’s commitment to securing new markets and reducing reliance on US pipelines.
However, the shift in oil flows has not been without consequences. While some countries, like China and India, have embraced Canadian oil, others have opted for different sources. Spain, a long-time buyer of Canadian crude, has reduced its imports from the Gulf Coast while not increasing purchases from the west coast. This change is attributed to Spain’s recent access to Venezuelan crude, which is similar to Canadian heavy oil.
Overall, the expanded Trans Mountain pipeline is making good on its promise to diversify Canada’s oil industry, offering new avenues for exports and reducing reliance on US refineries. The project’s success is likely to further encourage investment in Canadian oil production and strengthen the country’s position in the global energy market.
