**Arnhem, Netherlands** – A former German military base from World War II has been transformed into a unique residential and cultural enclave called Buitenplaats Koningsweg, located amidst the stunning Veluwe forest. Led by architecture firm MVRDV, landscape studio Buro Harro, and developer KondorWessels Projecten, the project pays homage to the site’s history while embracing sustainability and nature.

The masterplan carefully preserves the existing brick buildings, designated as national monuments, while new structures, like those replacing demolished buildings, are constructed in a light grey material. To highlight the site’s intriguing history, MVRDV incorporated “hyper-legible” design elements, making clear distinctions between original, reconstructed, and new additions.

The landscape design by Buro Harro focuses on rewilding the area, replacing concrete with minimal hardscaping and allowing nature to flourish. Fences have been removed, creating a seamless flow between the homes and the surrounding forests. This rewilding strategy has successfully integrated the site into the Veluwe landscape, resulting in a serene and tranquil environment.

The project features various housing options, including 21 sustainable homes designed by MVRDV, which are raised above ground level with minimal fencing, creating an intimate connection to the surrounding forest. These homes incorporate sustainable materials, like timber frames and recycled aggregates, and are designed to be energy-neutral.

Eleven unique follies designed through a competition are also part of the masterplan, offering holiday rentals and blending seamlessly into the forest landscape. The project also features shared spaces designed for both relaxation and cultural activities.

Buitenplaats Koningsweg stands as a testament to a successful collaboration between architecture, landscape design, and development. The project has not only breathed new life into a historic site but has also created a unique and sustainable living environment that harmoniously blends history, nature, and culture.
