Wed Sep 18 15:29:53 UTC 2024: ## Owaisi Condemns ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal, Calls it a Threat to Democracy

**Hyderabad, September 18, 2024:** AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has strongly criticized the government’s proposal for “one nation, one election,” calling it a dangerous move that undermines federalism and democracy.

In a social media post, Owaisi argued that holding elections simultaneously across the country would erode democratic accountability and compromise the very foundation of India’s constitution. He believes frequent and periodic elections are essential for a healthy democracy, adding that the proposal is driven by the Prime Minister and Home Minister’s desire to be involved in every election campaign, regardless of scale.

Owaisi’s statement comes shortly after the Union Cabinet approved the ‘one nation, one election’ proposal, which was recommended by a panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The panel’s report was submitted in March, just before the announcement of Lok Sabha elections.

Owaisi’s opposition to the proposal highlights a growing concern among some political leaders about the potential impact of simultaneous elections on India’s democratic structure.
