Tue Sep 17 16:44:03 UTC 2024: ## Arvind Kejriwal Resigns as Delhi Chief Minister Amidst Controversies
**New Delhi:** Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, submitted his resignation to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Tuesday, September 17. His close confidant, Atishi, has staked a claim to form the next government in the national capital.
Kejriwal’s third term as Chief Minister, which began in February 2020, was marred by a series of controversies. The most prominent was the allegation of money laundering in the Delhi Excise Policy case, which led to the arrest of several top AAP leaders, including Kejriwal himself. The policy was subsequently scrapped amidst corruption allegations.
Other controversies included a physical altercation involving Swati Maliwal, a member of the AAP, with a close aide of Kejriwal, and a statement by Kejriwal about potential riots if the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was implemented.
The BJP also accused Kejriwal of spending ₹45 crore on renovating his official residence, demanding his resignation on moral grounds.
Kejriwal’s tenure was also marked by criticism from the AIMIM president, Asaduddin Owaisi, who accused Kejriwal of failing to stop the 2020 Delhi riots and of making defamatory statements against the Muslim community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kejriwal’s resignation comes amidst growing public pressure and a series of legal battles surrounding the AAP and its leaders.
