**New Delhi, September 17, 2024:** Air India has begun its long-awaited USD 400 million fleet retrofit program, starting with its narrowbody aircraft. The airline will refresh the cabins of 67 legacy aircraft with a new three-cabin configuration, featuring upgraded seats, carpets, curtains, and upholstery.
The first aircraft to enter the retrofit program is VT-EXN, an A320neo, which went into the hangar on Monday. It is expected to re-enter service in December 2024, joining eight recently delivered A320neo aircraft that already feature the new interiors.
Air India plans to retrofit three to four narrowbody aircraft per month, with the entire fleet expected to be upgraded by mid-2025. This includes 27 A320neo aircraft, as well as older models like the A319s, A321ceos, and A320ceos. Fourteen A320neos and five A320ceos in full-economy configuration will be transferred to Air India Express.
The retrofit program will see the installation of over 15,000 next-generation seats across Premium Economy, Business, and Economy Class. The project is being coordinated by Air India’s Engineering team with global OEMs such as Collins, Astronics, and Thales.
The retrofitted A320neo aircraft will offer eight Business class seats, 24 Premium Economy seats, and 132 Economy seats. Features include spacious legroom, wider pitch, portable electronic device holders, and USB ports. The Business Class cabins will offer ergonomic seats with a 7-inch recline, adjustable armrests, and footrests. Premium Economy seats will feature larger seats with a four-way adjustable headrest. Economy seats will offer comfortable upholstery, a 28-29-inch seat pitch, and legroom.
Air India is also moving forward with the retrofit of 40 widebody Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft, with the first aircraft expected to begin retrofitting in early 2025. The airline has selected seats and inflight entertainment systems, completed interior designs, and is working with seat manufacturers to finalize regulatory certification and production.
Air India’s CEO and Managing Director, Campbell Wilson, stated that the retrofit program is a key step in the airline’s journey to becoming a world-class carrier. He emphasized that the comprehensive upgrade of Air India’s physical product is an important component of this transformation.
