Tue Sep 17 06:03:48 UTC 2024: ## Atishi to Become Delhi’s Interim Chief Minister after Kejriwal’s Resignation

**New Delhi:** In a surprise move, Atishi, a prominent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and current Delhi Minister, will take over as Chief Minister following Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation. This decision was made at an AAP legislators’ meeting today, where Kejriwal proposed Atishi’s name, which was unanimously accepted.

Atishi, a Rhodes Scholar and Oxford University alumnus, currently holds key portfolios including Education and Public Works Department. She has been instrumental in the AAP’s education reforms in Delhi.

The 43-year-old MLA from Kalkaji stepped into the ministerial role after Manish Sisodia’s arrest in a corruption case linked to the scrapped Delhi liquor policy. She has actively articulated the party’s position at events and in the media during Kejriwal and Sisodia’s time behind bars.

This elevation comes two days after Kejriwal announced his decision to step down as Chief Minister. He stated his intention to seek a mandate from the people before assuming office again, following his release from prison after being granted bail in the liquor policy case.

With assembly elections in Delhi scheduled for February, Kejriwal has demanded that they be held in November along with the Maharashtra elections. He, along with Sisodia, will be campaigning to seek the people’s support and will not return to their positions before the elections.

Atishi, in her first statement after the announcement, expressed gratitude to Kejriwal for his trust and appealed to the people of Delhi to re-elect him as Chief Minister.
