Legendary musician Sting, best known for his work with the Police and his successful solo career, has embarked on a new tour with a unique twist: a stripped-down trio format. This marks a return to his musical roots, as Sting shared in an interview with Billboard, his inclination lies in surprising audiences with unexpected arrangements.
The “Sting 3.0” tour, which kicked off in Europe this summer, landed in Detroit this week for two nights at the Fillmore. The intimate setting allowed fans to experience Sting’s music in a new, raw way, stripped back to the essence of the songs.
Joining Sting on stage are longtime guitarist Dominic Miller and drummer Chris Maas. This powerful trio delivers a dynamic performance that showcases the intricacies of Sting’s songwriting and the musicianship of his bandmates.
The setlist included a mix of Police classics and solo hits, with a special emphasis on the raw energy of “Driven to Tears” and the soulful depth of “Desert Rose.” Fans were also treated to a new single, “I Wrote Your Name,” released earlier this month.
“Playing every night, it’s still very experimental,” Sting explained. “It’s exciting.”
The Detroit crowd embraced the intimate performance, with a palpable energy that filled the venue throughout the nearly two-hour show. Sting, known for his engaging stage presence, led several call-and-response moments with the audience, further connecting with his fans.
The “Sting 3.0” tour continues across North America throughout the fall, culminating with performances at major festivals including Bourbon & Beyond and Ohana Festival.
This unique trio format has reinvigorated Sting’s approach to his music, delivering a fresh and captivating experience for both the artist and his audience.
