**Honiara, Solomon Islands:** The Solomon Islands received a substantial SBD 8.809 billion in development assistance from bilateral and multilateral partners between 2016 and 2021, according to the Ministry of National Planning and Developing Coordination (MNPDC). This funding played a significant role in supporting the nation’s development efforts across various sectors, including health, education, infrastructure, governance, and climate change mitigation.
Multilateral partners contributed SBD 3.834 billion (43%), while bilateral partners provided SBD 4.984 billion (57%). These funds were allocated in the form of technical assistance, grants, and concessional loans.
During the same period, the Solomon Islands Government (SIG) contributed SBD 4.795 billion through its annual development budget. This resulted in a combined total of SBD 13.604 billion, with the SIG contributing 35% and development partners contributing 65%.
The largest share of these funds (SBD 7.362 billion or 54%) was directed towards programs and projects aligned with Objective One of the National Development Strategy (NDS), focusing on sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
While development partners’ significant contribution is vital, it also raises concerns about the country’s long-term reliance on external assistance. The government is urged to prioritize diversifying the country’s economic base and strengthening public financial management systems to achieve sustainable development.
Minister for National Planning and Development Coordination, Rexon Annex Ramofalia, emphasized the need for aligning future development financing with the NDS and the Solomon Islands National Infrastructure Priority Pipeline (SINIPP). This will require ongoing consultations between the government, its citizens, and development partners.
The MNPDC also stressed the importance of development partners sharing program data bi-annually to facilitate accurate budget planning and decision-making. Proper accounting for all development finance flows is crucial for accurately capturing the magnitude of future assistance.
This call to action emphasizes the need for a collaborative approach between the Solomon Islands Government and its international partners to ensure long-term sustainable development and economic growth.
