Wed Sep 18 03:00:24 UTC 2024: ## Thousands Pay Respects to Ancestors in Dholpur During Pitru Paksha
Dholpur, Rajasthan: Thousands of people flocked to sacred water bodies in Dholpur, Rajasthan, during the ongoing Pitru Paksha, a 16-day period dedicated to honoring ancestors. The festivities began on Tuesday, September 3rd, with a large number of devotees converging at the Tirthraj Machkund and other water bodies like the Bamni and Parvati rivers.
These gatherings are marked by the ritual of “Tarpan,” where offerings of water are made to deceased ancestors, as well as the performance of “Shraddha” and “Pind Daan.”
Mahant Krishnadas of the Machkund temple explained that the tradition of Pitru Paksha, which spans from the full moon of Bhadrapada to the new moon of Ashwin, calls for performing these rituals on specific days to ensure ancestors receive blessings and transcend to the “Ishta Lokas,” or their destined realms.
During this period, families pay their respects to their deceased relatives by performing Tarpan at rivers and water bodies. In the absence of such locations, it is also permissible to perform the ritual at home.
The Mahant emphasized the importance of honoring ancestors through these rituals, stating that neglecting such duties can lead to “Pitru Rinas,” or debt to ancestors, as well as “Pitru Dosh,” or ancestral curses.
The 16-day period of Pitru Paksha is considered auspicious for the ancestors to descend to earth and bestow blessings upon their descendants. The performance of Tarpan, Shraddha, and Pind Daan is believed to appease them and facilitate their journey to their rightful place.
