Tue Sep 17 11:55:34 UTC 2024: ## UEFA Champions League Gets Major Overhaul: More Teams, New Format, and Higher Stakes

The UEFA Champions League is undergoing a significant revamp for the 2024-25 season, expanding to 36 teams and introducing a new league phase format.

Gone are the traditional group stages. Instead, all 36 clubs will compete in a single league phase, facing off against eight different opponents – four at home, four away. The top eight teams after this league phase will automatically qualify for the knockout rounds.

However, the battle for the remaining knockout spots will be intense. Teams ranked 9th to 24th will participate in two-legged playoffs to secure a coveted spot in the round of 16. The higher-ranked team in each playoff pairing will host the second leg.

For the teams finishing 25th or lower in the league phase, the dream of Champions League glory will be over. They will be eliminated, with no consolation prize of competing in the UEFA Europa League.

The competition will revert to its familiar knockout format from the round of 16 onward.

This format shift aims to increase the competitiveness and drama of the tournament, providing more opportunities for teams to compete at the highest level and guaranteeing a greater number of matches for fans to enjoy.
