**Aarhus, Denmark** – A charming courtyard in Aarhus has undergone a revitalization, transforming it into a vibrant and welcoming gathering space. The project, spearheaded by BUPL, the Danish Child and Youth Association, aimed to create an inviting meeting point that reflects the organization’s values of creativity and collaboration.
The courtyard now boasts new urban furniture designed to encourage group gatherings, with different levels providing space for lounging and enjoying the sun or fresh air. Inspired by the architectural elements of Aarhus, the furniture utilizes a modern design language that blends seamlessly with the city’s historic charm. Brick facades, granite surfaces, and classic lighting fixtures create a cohesive and inviting ambiance.
To ensure sustainability, the project incorporates natural stone paving in both parking areas and recreational zones. Landscaping features evergreen plants that bloom throughout the year, requiring minimal maintenance, and include smaller trees that thrive in the rooftop environment. The plant beds are designed to provide optimal drainage and root volume, with a special soil mixture containing crushed recycled bricks.
The courtyard also boasts a new covered bicycle parking area, aptly named “The Bicycle Mosquito,” which is a playful reinterpretation of Flemming Quist Møller’s iconic design. This whimsical feature draws cyclists away from the main entrance, welcoming guests and staff through a curved and green recreational area.
The project highlights BUPL’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement. All wood used is FSC-certified, ensuring responsible forestry practices. The hardwood used in the furniture is long-lasting, requiring minimal maintenance despite the Danish climate’s varying weather conditions.
This revitalized courtyard stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of MBYland, BUPL, and a team of talented architects, engineers, and technical designers. The project, completed in 2020, showcases a successful blend of modern design and sustainability, creating a welcoming and engaging space for the Aarhus community.
