Mon Sep 16 15:21:08 UTC 2024: ## TSA Proposes Delay in Full REAL ID Enforcement, But Deadline Remains

**Washington, D.C.** – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has proposed delaying the full enforcement of REAL ID requirements for Americans until 2027, while maintaining the original May 7, 2025 deadline for states to achieve compliance.

The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, aims to enhance security standards for driver’s licenses and identification cards issued by U.S. states. Starting May 7, 2025, non-compliant licenses will be unacceptable for boarding flights, accessing federal facilities, or entering nuclear power plants.

Despite the proposed delay in full enforcement, TSA emphasizes that the May 7, 2025 deadline for state compliance remains.

“The proposed rule does not extend the REAL ID deadline,” TSA stated.

The agency justifies the delay by citing concerns about a potential surge in last-minute applications for REAL ID-compliant licenses, potentially overwhelming state agencies and leading to delays. This surge is attributed to the public’s expectation of further deadline extensions.

“DHS believes this surge could overwhelm states and result in backlogs and delays in REAL ID issuance,” the agency said.

TSA proposes a phased enforcement approach, allowing federal agencies to implement card-based enforcement in stages over two years. This would provide flexibility and mitigate potential negative impacts on travelers and industry stakeholders during the transition.

“This rule allows us to plan for a range of scenarios to help minimize the potential impact to travelers, industry stakeholders and states during implementation,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske.

The agency continues to encourage individuals to obtain REAL ID-compliant identification ahead of the deadline to avoid potential travel delays.

“TSA is engaging with the public, licensing jurisdictions, and states to facilitate a smooth transition to REAL ID enforcement beginning May 7, 2025,” Pekoske added.

Despite the proposed delay, TSA remains committed to full enforcement of REAL ID by May 7, 2027.
