Sun Sep 15 17:20:12 UTC 2024: ## Stellantis Defies Calls to Delay EU Emissions Targets, Sparking Industry Rift

**Paris, France** – Stellantis NV, Europe’s second-largest automaker, has rejected calls for a delay in the European Union’s ambitious emissions targets set to take effect in 2025. This stance sets Stellantis on a collision course with other major European manufacturers, who are lobbying for a two-year extension.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares asserted that the company is prepared to meet the targets, having invested heavily in electric vehicles and streamlined production processes. “Everyone has known about the rules for a long time and has had time to prepare,” he stated, adding that the industry should now “have a race.”

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has proposed a delay, arguing that the EU’s automotive sector faces immense pressure from cheaper Chinese models, high energy costs, and sluggish demand. They estimate that complying with the targets could force automakers to halt production of two million cars or face hefty fines totaling €13 billion.

However, Stellantis, which left ACEA in 2022, stands firm in its commitment to the current regulations. They emphasize the need for continued government support for electric vehicle purchases.

This clash underscores the growing tension within the European auto industry as it navigates the complex transition towards a more sustainable future. While some manufacturers push for a softer approach, Stellantis believes the existing targets are necessary to accelerate the shift to electric mobility.
