The 75th Emmy Awards delivered a night full of surprises, with historical wins and unexpected upsets. The FX series “Shogun,” a sprawling tale of power struggles in feudal Japan, dominated the night, claiming a record-breaking 18 awards, including Best Drama Series.

Hiroyuki Sanada, who played the central role of Lord Toranaga, became the first Japanese actor to win an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series. His victory was followed by a win for Anna Sawai, who played the role of Lady Mariko, making her the second Japanese actor to win an Emmy in the same category.

“Shogun” was not the only show to break records. HBO’s “The Bear,” while failing to take home the Best Comedy Series award, still managed to secure an impressive 11 Emmys, including a second consecutive win for Jeremy Allen White as Best Actor in a Comedy.

However, the biggest upset of the night came when “Hacks,” starring Jean Smart as a stand-up comedian navigating late-night television, won the Best Comedy Series award. This marked the third Emmy win for Smart in the category, cementing her place as a comedy icon.

Other highlights included the win for Netflix’s dark comedy “Baby Reindeer” in the Best Limited Series category, with creator and star Richard Gadd taking home awards for his lead acting, writing, and directing. The show, which tackles themes of sexual abuse and emotional turmoil, received praise for its powerful storytelling.

Jodie Foster won her first Emmy for her performance as a police chief in HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” while Elizabeth Debicki received the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama award for her portrayal of Princess Diana in the final season of “The Crown.”

The ceremony also celebrated the contributions of Greg Berlanti, a producer and writer known for shows like “Dawson’s Creek” and “Everwood,” with the Television Academy’s Governors Award for his work in improving LGBTQ visibility on television.

The 75th Emmy Awards proved to be a night full of surprises, showcasing the power of diverse stories and highlighting the talent of both established and emerging performers.
