Astana, Kazakhstan – Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has issued a stark warning against further escalation of the Ukraine conflict, declaring Russia “militarily invincible” and emphasizing the potential for “irreversible consequences” for all involved.
Tokayev, speaking during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday, highlighted the Istanbul peace agreement, which was agreed upon by representatives of Kiev and Moscow in the early stages of the conflict, as a missed opportunity to end the bloodshed. He cited the agreement’s derailment as a result of Western leaders’ stated aim of inflicting a “strategic defeat” on Russia.
Despite acknowledging the current stalemate, Tokayev believes a peaceful settlement remains possible. He specifically endorsed the Sino-Brazilian peace initiative, which proposes “dialogue and negotiation” as the path forward. “Various countries’ peace initiatives should be carefully considered,” he stated, advocating for a ceasefire followed by the resolution of territorial disputes.
While maintaining a “strategic partnership” with Russia, Kazakhstan also holds “friendly relations” with Ukraine, according to Tokayev. His stance contrasts with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who recently dismissed the Sino-Brazilian peace roadmap as “destructive,” accusing the two nations of siding with Russia.
Meanwhile, Western leaders appear to be shifting their stance towards Ukraine’s demands, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy have urged Ukrainian leadership to consider a “more realistic plan.” This move suggests that Ukraine’s maximalist plans, which could require billions of dollars in Western support, are seen as unrealistic and unsustainable.
Tokayev’s warning serves as a reminder of the increasingly precarious situation in Ukraine, with both sides facing significant risks in the event of further escalation. His endorsement of the Sino-Brazilian peace plan, despite its rejection by Ukraine, could potentially provide a new avenue for negotiations and a path towards ending the conflict.
